Who knew that chips could be fancy? Not just splash of vinegar, sprinkle of salt (always that way so the salt sticks) and a good squirt of ketchup.
Oh no! Now a very cool little restaurant in Norwich is doing the most amazing toppings for your chips - and the name? Hot Chip. Mum and I have had a voucher for ages and have been meaning to go and try them, in fact we've even gone past a few times and not gone in - a huge mistake it turns out now. The tiny shop is wheelchair friendly which makes a very pleasant change from waiting outside small shops and the guy serving was really friendly and helpful. You can eat in or take away; but we decided to take away. Back to the toppings though - you can have everything from the classic salt and vinegar, to garlic mayo and even fresh herbs and those are just the basic toppings. They also do some that are whole meals in themselves - I was keen to try the VEGGIE - pan-fried haloumi cheese & mango salsa, the SUNDAY ROAST - roast beef, peas, horseradish cream & rich onion gravy and the SPANIARD - pan fried chorizo, melting Manchego cheese & quince salsa. Today though we used our voucher for a small taster of the YANKEE - with their special tomato sauce, it came wrapped in newspaper like grease-proof paper, complete with printed stories, as you'd expect from chip shops of old. We were also tempted to try the NEW YORKER - beef pastrami, gherkins & melting Swiss cheese - I'm a sucker for this combination and it did not disappoint. The chips were delicious, the toppings yummy and a really lovely treat, much posher than your day-to-day fish and chips. I now can't wait to go back again and try the rest of the menu! Join in a long distance dinner party, for good food, good fun and good conversation. No matter where you are, no matter what time you eat or what diet you can eat, you can enjoy the dinner party. I'll be providing an optional recipe which can be adapted to your own preferences. Or you can have whatever you would normally eat. The important part is connecting with others and making new friends. Join the event on Facebook here... and feel free to invite others. It's officially being held on Friday 8th March; but it's an open ended party - the beauty of a virtual experience! Chinese Salmon with Stir-fryed Vegetables Serves 2
Image courtesy of rakratchada torsap / FreeDigitalPhotos.net I love pancakes, I can't quite believe that you can take flour, milk and eggs, mix them together and get something so delicious! They're so simple and so versatile. I like my pancakes thin and crispy; but the rest of my family prefer them thick and doughy. Traditionally I always have pancakes for breakfast on my birthday; but a whole day dedicated to them is pretty amazing in my opinion. Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before Lent, when Christians used up ingredients that were forbidden until Easter. These included fat, butter and eggs. Pancakes are the perfect way to use them up! I've been quite adventurous with pancake toppings in the past, both sweet and savoury. These are my absolute favourites.
